Working with Complex PTSD Developmental Wounds in Individual Therapy

Christine Donohue, MFT, SEP, CMT will offer a brief sharing of a composite clinical case of those who experienced complex developmental trauma. The goal is to demonstrate how combining SE intervention with Gestalt-based parts-work supports some client’s self-relationship and, as a result, their embodied empowerment and sense of wholeness.

Specific questions to be addressed are:

  • “How does an adult client ‘grow’ internalized self-support when they grew up feeling alone, having experienced neglect or other forms of abuse and betrayal by a parent or care-giver?".

  • “How does an adult client with a history of developmental complex PTSD and who lives with chronic hyperarousal, panic, heightened anxiety, debilitating depression, and a tendency to go into “fight or flight”, “appease” and/or “freeze” learn to value themselves such that they assertively set healthy boundaries in their lives?”.

The discussion will offer specifics regarding:

  • Creating safety with individuals who use coping strategies of intellectualization, denial, and compartmentalization;

  • Pacing considerations when working with individuals who experienced pre-verbal trauma or excessive abuse and who easily become overwhelmed with interoception.

  • When and how to engage SE tools and Gestalt interventions to support someone to relate to traumatized internal parts of their psyche from their wise adult self.

There will be time allocated for discussion and Q&A during this presentation.

It is important to share here that based upon the specific population of this composite case presentation, each of the clients are Caucasian and have various degrees of white privilege. The clients discussed are based upon substantial growth each has made in treatment, however it is important to acknowledge that aspects of their improvement cannot be uncoupled from their financial means and socio-economic position as educated, white professionals. I look forward to convening with all who are drawn to join me and NorCA SEPA on Sunday, Dec. 10th, 2023.

Speaker Series: Current Clinical Trauma Treatment: How Does Somatic Experiencing Fit In?   w/ Mark Ludwig, LCSW, SEP

 https://currenttreatment.eventbrite.com

We are all rightfully proud of our trainings in SE. They are thorough and prepare us well for practice. For professionals who need to explicate their clinical model or refer clients to other models, it's also good to know how our model fits in the larger frame of existing clinical approaches. This short talk will attempt to position SE within that larger frame and compare basic theories and practices

About the Workshop Leader: Mark Ludwig’s original academic training at UC Berkeley was in psychodynamic Clinical Social Work. The program was informed by a holistic model (bio-psycho-social) and continues to inform Mark’s practice and thinking as a Somatic Psychotherapist. Mark’s somatic psychotherapy training began in the mid 70’s at the Radix Institute, a neo-reichian training center that certified through a vigorous three-year training, and then continued in Switzerland in the early 80’s with David Boadella and an additional certification in Somatic Psychotherapy-Biosynthesis.

Mark Ludwig continued training and development with a series of depth trainings in early development within the parent-infant mental health model (Fellow in the Harvard Children’s Hospital-Napa County Department of Health Infant-Parent Program 2002-03). Mark studied interpersonal neuropsychology in the Allan Schore Study Group in Berkeley (2004-2012) and attachment theory applications to adult therapy in Mark’straining with Diana Fosha and her AEDP faculty (2006-08). Mark Ludwig completed the three-year training in Somatic Experiencing trauma and is Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). Mark completed a one-year training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics a developmental trauma model designed by Bruce Perry MD.

Mark has been an international trainer (Western and Southern Europe, Australia, North and South America) in both schools of Somatic Psychotherapy from which he graduated and have served as core faculty and, at times, Program Director at the two San Francisco Bay Area universities with Somatic Psychology MA programs (JFK University and the California Institute for Integral Studies).
